In this alumni success spotlight, we sit down with Colby, a recent Colaberry alum and current Business Analyst, to discuss his experience both during and beyond Colaberry’s Data Analytics Training program.

Colaberry: How did you hear about Colaberry?
Colby: I heard about Colaberry through a friend.
Colaberry: Was any family member(s) or support system instrumental in helping you reach your current level of success?
Colby: Hustling between part-time jobs, I was living my life from paycheck to paycheck on a tight budget. I needed some change in my life, and I was open to new opportunities. This is when I stumbled across the Colaberry School of Data Analytics by chance. A close friend who was already in the IT field had told me that he had heard great things from Colaberry, and this led me to take their demo class.
Colaberry: Why did you decide to enroll in the Colaberry School of Data Analytics?
Colby: After that first demo class, I could see that this was a great opportunity, and it would be a stepping stone to something extraordinary in my life. I also felt confident that I was up to the task of tackling this course.
Colaberry: What challenges or circumstances did you have to overcome to be successful (if any) and how did Colaberry assist you in that?
Colby: I was having a hard time making ends meet and I wanted to improve my life, Colaberry helped me to overcome some of the biggest doubts I had of myself and worked with me as I balanced life’s daily struggles.
Colaberry: Did you have a data analytics/data science background or any associated skills before joining Colaberry?
Colby: Before Colaberry, I had zero experience with coding. Initially, when I started with the program, it was difficult since I was burning at both ends. I was able to complete the course in 3 months, and I decided to quit my part-time job and concentrate completely on phase 2 of the program.
Colaberry: What training courses did you complete through Colaberry?
Colby: Data Analytics
Colaberry: How do you think you benefited most from Colaberry’s training?
Colby: I was able to complete phase 2 in a month. After completing all levels of training, I was ready to interview with companies. 7 interviews and 750+ hours of training later, I already had offers from 3 companies.
Colaberry: Comparing your current salary to your previous position, do you feel that Colaberry helped you to reach your goals? In what way has this improved your life?
Colby: I was about to make triple the amount of what I was making in my previous job, just by completing the Colaberry course training with determination and hard work.
Colaberry: What did you think of the Refactored.ai platform and did it help you gain any specific soft skills?
Colby: One aspect I love is the feedback system in the Refactored platform. It has real-time video and audio analysis while it records you doing specific activities. The platform analyzes specific delivery of soft skills and determines where a student can improve in a specific area.
Some of the soft skills I perfected with the Refactored platform were:
- Communication Skills (non-verbal and verbal skills)
- Self-Awareness
- Critical/Creative Thinking
- Time Management
- Improved my “grit”
Colaberry: How did those skills help you in the workplace or get a job?
Colby: I was able to use the projects I worked on with Colaberry in interviews. The soft skills, communication, and collaboration skills I learned at Colaberry helped me tremendously to differentiate myself and stand out amongst the crowd.
Colaberry: Would you recommend Colaberry to others? If yes, why?
Colby: Yes, I would recommend them. The program changed my life. The journey was not easy but was not impossible to achieve. I am fully satisfied and happy with my job.
Colaberry: Would you ever consider returning to Colaberry to take more classes?
Colby: Yes, I would.
Colaberry: What do you find most enjoyable about your current position?
Colby: Before working as a data analyst, I was on a tight budget and not able to buy everything that I wanted. Even the essentials such as groceries would give me undue stress. I can remember several times being at the checkout line and not knowing if I had enough to cover my purchase or worried that I had gone over my budget. After I got my first paycheck as a data analyst, I can remember being able to go to the store and purchase whatever I wanted without having to worry if I could afford it. This was a beautiful moment for me to realize that I no longer had to stress about those things anymore. Now I can live life according to my terms and not live a restricted life.
Colby started his new career at Deliv and now is continuing his career at Wells Fargo as a Business Analyst.
